I started out writing a post about my current state of wallowing in self pity, which is just not at all flattering or interesting. Instead, I am just going to point you in the direction of something a little more interesting:
Korean parents are paying American families to adopt their kids (older, not babies) so they can come to the US.
WTF? How is this even remotely legal?
I actually have known a couple of Chinese “kids” (not kids anymore) whose parents bought houses in L.A. & hired housekeepers to supervise them while the parents lived in Taiwan. That situation always made me wonder about the legalities involved so I guess I can see where people might like the quasi-adoption route.
Whoo. This is so strange, I don’t even know how I feel about it yet.
Happy New Year, at any rate!
Whoa.
“Despite the benefits, some young Koreans adopted in this manner have shown signs of emotional distress”
You think?
We hosted 2 Korean exchange students for a month last year. Their teacher explained it`s very difficlt to enter universities in Korea, so many parents hope their kids can go to college over here, so they have them studying English from a very young age (the youngest kid on her program was only 9). The students` parents requested that she take them on a tour of Stanford, just to inspire them.
It does sound a bit strange but at least this way their kids get the benfits of a wealthy country without having to sever all contact with their families. I think it’s much worse that babies get seperated from their families and have no contact and go to another country just to get those exact same benefits. that bothers me more.
