Yesterday was A’s 33rd birthday. In addition to seeing a David Sedaris reading and eating at a restaurant that was gets a lot of press but really wasn’t that exciting, A recieved a small karaoke machine from M and me.
In case I haven’t mentioned it, A LOoooooves karaoke. We rented a karaoke machine instead of gettng a DJ for our wedding. For A’s bachelor party, his friends rented a professional karaoke machine and mounted it on the back of this double decker fish van. Then they drove it around San Francisco all night karaoke-ing.
(Yes, they did get stopped by the police and I think they got a citation. But you know what excites a bunch of new lawyers more than karaoke-ing on a big fish? Getting to go to court to weasel out of a ticket because the cop didn’t have a decible detector and they DID happen install the legally required seatbelts in the back just in case they got stopped!)
Yes. He loves karaoke.
As I was saying, A recieved a small karaoke machine and we wasted no time breaking it in. First thing this morning we plugged it in and started karaoke-ing to the only Karaoke CD we had on hand: Traditional Kid’s favorites*.
Now, as any karaoke lover will tell you, it isn’t about your singing skills. Good karaoke is about heart. It is about feeling. It is about pouring your guts into a song in front of your best friends with no shame.
If I would let him (or if our local friends would freaking TRY it already), A would spend all his evenings doing private room karaoke. Now, he can in our own living room. It will just be a lot cheaper than paying for a crappy room with a slimy pleather sofa. Plus, in our own house we won’t have to to smuggle in beer.
The only down side for A is that there seems to be some competition for the microphone. I think M has the bug too.

*Oh yes. We own some karaoke-cds because god forbid A should go to a party with a karaoke machine and not be able to sing "Blaze of Glory" by Bon Jovi or any of his favorite Elton John hits. Today we didn’t have them because A had loaned them to a friend who also owns a machine. I believe he will be trying to get them back first thing tomorrow.

Ha! What great pictures!
You, are a genius! Wait, why this long for the machine? Dude looks haaaapy!
Has Mr. A ever tried playing Kareoke Revolution? It’s an awesome game and one of my friends ones all 6 versions of it. Not a lot of bon jovi or elton john on there though. Lots of Madonna though.
Hahaha–so cute! I love the bachelor party idea too. That’s the most original idea I’ve heard in awhile…
Love the pics! My hubby isn’t into that stuff, although my brother-in-law is a die-hard. I will never get over him singing Staying Alive by the Bee Gees. It still gives me nightmares.
dammit. i totally forgot about david sedaris being in town and i wanted to see (hear?) him! ah well…
the fish van? it rocks!
i have a couple of friends that are waaaaay into kareoke. i should let you guys know when they go out. i have yet to join in on the fun.
I think M is going to lap him in the karaoke talent soon. She looks so serious about it. The dedication is what’s going to make her rise to the top of her craft.
We have a vcd karaoke (kala OK..haha) machine, and at all the partied we all sing Karaoke too. lots of fun!
Mrs Figby pointed me to this post. Most of my karaoke experience is with coworkers in Tokyo, but I can tell M is singing from the heart… It reminds me of myself after a long evening in a Tokyo karaoke room. A must bring his karaoke machine to the KLB gathering in July so we can belt out a few hits.
That is hilarious! Just imagine how he can embarrass M in the future by doing karaoke in front of her friends!
My cousins do karaoke in their basement and it always gets good use at get-togethers. I’ve heard some priceless renditions…
And I love the picture of M&A singing!
