Mutter Museum

Mr. A and I are in Philadelphia so he can attend a national meeting of an Asian lawyers’ organization.  I came along because the plane tickets were cheap and the firm is already paying for the hotel room.  While we are here, I did two things I can’t do at home.

Most people would come to Philly and eat cheesesteaks.   Not me.  The first thing I did was locate the city’s best Banh Mi restaurants.  Then I walked about two miles each way so I could buy them.  Even though I was quite cynical after my 4 mile walk, I was not disappointed.   They were delicious.  I would post a photo, but I forgot the computer cord thingy.  MMmmmm.  Banh Mi.

I also convinced Mr. A to skip an afternoon session to come with me to the Mutter Museum of Medical Oddities.  What better way to spend the afternoon than looking at pictures of tuberculousis of the eye?  Or pickled tumors?  Or a freeze dried human being?

I had been the the Mutter Museum before and todays experience was very similar.  I spent most of the time breathing out my mouth so I wouldn’t puke.  But!  While it was totally disgusting, it was also strangely intriguing.

The biggest disappointment was that the gift shop was closed before we left.  My desire for skeleton lollipops, bouncing rubber eyeballs and squishy anatomical hearts was was denied.   Maybe the next time…

I am so jealous. I have wanted to go to the Mutter museum for years. Both times I’ve been to Philadelphia we haven’t had time to go. :-(

Go eat a cheesesteak, anyway. I once dated a man from Philadelphia, but, he was living in Rapid City, SD at the time. I swear he wet-dreams about cheesesteak…

I too am jealous! Sounds lovely!

  • I saw the Mutter museam on the Discover Channel years ago and then drove down with my girlfriend to Philly just to see it. I have to say, we spent quite a while walking around and just gawking. It is really interesting.
