Preschool vacation

M is out of school for the next 3.5 weeks.  Ack.  That is a very very long time.

Mr. A is in a pretty busy phase and will be traveling off and on in the next few weeks too.  I am exhausted just thinking about it.

I don’t usually do book reviews, but this is just a mini shout out:

In other news, I just read the book Buy Buy Baby.  It was very interesting and a quick read.  It also made me feel like a huge sucker for buying into the commodification of my children’s childhoods.

I also particularly liked the explanation of the differences between GenX and Baby Boomer mothers.  It gave me a little insight into generational/sub-cultural differences that may have contributed this bruhaha.

I give it a thumbs up.

(This is an unsponsored review. I got the book from the library for free.)

  • preschool vacation bodes well for combating fisher’s incessant “i need someone to play with me!” whining that has been in full effect lately.

I’ll have to read that book to see if it sheds light on my difficulties with my stepmom. Honestly, what I notice about that generation is that they don’t ask for what they want outright, but try to get it other ways. And it makes me really sad (as well as irritated) because it means they were taught that you can’t ask for what you want. And, I assume they were taught that, specifically, girls can’t ask for what they want and expect to get it. Which is horrible. Obviously, this is a generalization, but it seems to hold true with many women I know.

  • And how funny and true that the link to the parenting/consumerism book is to Amazon.com… I went over and immediately thought, “Hmm, should I buy this?” ACK! The real reason I cannot afford to stay home with Bonzo is that I have already spent way too much at Amazon during the first two months of maternity leave.

I’ve often had that issue with book links, though; there’s just no other great place I know to link to a random book and see the cover and publishing info so fast. So I send the unsuspecting over there too. If only the library posted pretty pictures like that!

Actually, the Denver Public Library does post the pictures-I’m guessing other major city libraries do?
I always find the generational demographic fascinating, since I am of the “Baby Bust” generation-the low birth rate during the Vietnam War-overshadowed by the baby boomers, but never really getting them-and thus limited in our opportunities because we couldn’t “speak the dominant culture.” Most of our parents were born before the BB (mine were in 1942)-thus we didn’t learn the “culture” growing up. For a long time marketers just ignored us (which probably impacted our independence also), and we were even referred to as the Wedge generation-now I see it more common that we are either lumped with GenX or BB-neither of which really fits. Someone described us at some point as the generation that wanted “off the BB roller coaster.” And in fact, I seem to have a lot of friends who “dropped out” and moved “overseas.” I think it’s interesting that now we are more likely to be 1st time parents at 35+, something that was very obvious at my hs reunion. I wonder how that will impact where our children fit in their generation? Of course, my partner is definitely BB by birth year, and is THE consummate antithesis of the BB, so like anything else, the categories only get you so far ; ) But it’s a useful reference point. ~lmc

  • Oh, good. I just checked that book out of our library. I am working on not buying much of anything new for Baby Sister.
