I am starting to get a wee bit concerned about the TV writer’s strike. What the heck am I going to do if there are no new shows on after the holidays? Most of the shows I have been enjoying have wrapped up (kid nation, America’s next top model, Survivor), what will take their place??
In preparation for a long dry spell, I re-subscribed to netflix. Tonight, I watched the final episode of Dexter Season 1 and I am thoroughly creeped out. Weeds is the next series on my list, along with all the movies we haven’t seen since L came home.
But can that really get me through until spring?

Ever considered House, Veronica Mars – those are my favorite – and perhaps that could get you through some TV withdrawal….
Big Love is great too, also if you haven’t seen it, Freaks and Geeks is seriously amazing.
Brothers and Sisters is a show I just got addicted to so I think I’m going to catch up on that with Netflix.
I found this list of reality stuff starting soon:
December 15 — Crowned: The Mother of All Beauty Pageants on the CW
January 1st — The Biggest Loser (Couples) on NBC
January 3rd — The Celebrity Apprentice on NBC
January 7 — Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie-Ann on ABC (Dancing With the Stars judges Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba compete to create the best performance team.)
January 8 — American Idol on Fox
February 7 — Survivor on CBS
February 12 — Big Brother
February 18 — The Baby Borrowers on NBC (a social experiment that will put teens on the fast track to getting married and raising a family.)
And, America’s Next Top Model comes back on Feb. 28!
Other than that, it’s enough to make me want to start praying for an end…and that’s saying something.
You HAVE to watch Arrested Development….you’ll love it.
Ok, to help narrow down the options: I have watched most of the HBO series except the Wire, which is available on my HBO on demand.
I don’t like the talenty shows like dancing & American Idol. I could be convinced to try the Apprentice and Big Brother, though I have been off both of them for several years.
Isn’t Lost ever coming back? How long will it take to get the shows back on after the strike is over? Don’t the writers like to watch TV too? Can’t they take pity on us?
I would have never thought you liked Survivor too. I’ve wanted to be on it since day one.
Yes, Lost is returning (I think they said) end of Jan. I’ve heard the strike will affect Lost too. Makes me pissed about it since Lost shows less than 1/2 the year and even then some of those are re-runs. No excuse to not have new episodes stocked up.
If you want to borrow Freaks and Geeks, we have it. it’s SO GOOD.
Another great show is The Riches. I don’t know if it’s available on dvd, but they’re returning for their second season in March. It’s Minnie Driver and Eddie Izzard (love!) playing American “travelers” (ie: gypsies) that end up in a very wealthy community, scamming everyone. It’s fantastic.
If Lost doesn’t come back in full force I will be so sad. It’s the last season, isn’t it?
We just watched Season 1 of Dexter – I LOVE IT!!! Weeds is next on our list too.
Nip/Tuck is a good one – and there are 5 seasons, which will be a nice time-filler
Queer as Folk was another great Showtime series… also has multiple seasons.
I’m going to assume you have watched Project Runway and Top Chef? If not, let me know, I’ll hook you up. Better than Survivor!
The Wire is fantabulous! I’m on season 2 of Dexter right now…. addictive!
ditto Veronica Mars if you didn’t watch the first time around.
I am having the same pre-emptive withdrawal issues. It’s really sad. I’m considering watching Crowned. And I do watch AI. But other than that — agh!
I love Netflixing series that I missed the first go around. If you never saw it, I can recommend Firefly and its follow up movie, Serenity.
I’m delurking because I enjoy reading you every day. I wanted to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas.
I am a Big Brother fan and had no idea a new season was starting in February – yeah! (Thanks, April) My sis and I watch and plot together – it’s a weird bonding thing.
Working full time, with a six year old leaves me no time to watch TV at all. I read the Project Runway recaps and that’s about it. I’m about to go into baby jail though, and I’m looking forward to TV time. Really, there is only so much you can do while incarcerated on the couch with a newborn.
I’m quite certain I could not handle Dexter. People who can impress me.
Veronica Mars, Veronica Mars, Veronica Mars!! I have never loved a TV show like I did this one.
I also second the “Arrested Development” and “Freaks and Geeks” recommendation. “Undeclared” was another underachieving show by Judd Apatow wit much of the same cast from F&G.
Big Love is intriguing, too.
I always recomend this(I’m a student) why not try to read a book? other than that I recomend watcjhing fraiser or newsradio or some independent and foreigin movies.
Monk and psych start up again in January… also I can’t wait for the tudors to come back. In the meantime the man is subjecting me to worst from hong kong every evening. How many crappy HK dramas can I take b/f I snap?
Who says I DON’T read? I read on average 3-5 books a week. I am guessing you don’t have kids, Black Strawberry, or you might understand the way they suck the energy right out of your brain and disturb your reading.
After they go to bed, it can be nice to do something thoughtless to relax. Watching TV and reading at the same time is a lot less disruptive then trying to read while the shorties are vying for my attention.
Loving the “just read” comment…I have been reading the same book for a week..unheard of in my pre-Sofie life.
Lost is coming back in late Jan/early Feb…but for only eight episodes, and then nada until Jan, 2009..if we are lucky.
Can I humbly suggest Buffy the Vampire Slayer? You may have already watched it, but I had throw it out there. It is probaby my favorite show ever, and there are many seasons to watch. Can also suggest Battlestar Gallactica, am into the second season and am loving it (the new season is coming on in March, I think).
And I was wondering just who watched all those mindless shows on TV! ha! Until just this moment, I’d forgotten that I used to watch the test pattern while nursing babies at 3:00 AM! Y’all are too young to even know what a test pattern IS! I will no longer judge the viewing tastes of baby-jailed Americans.
Duh–VH-1 Rock of Love. You haven’t lived until you’ve spent an hour wondering if Bret Michaels is bald under that bandanna.
Okay, I’m possibly a loser.
Chris
I’ve spent more than an hour wondering that while watching Rock of Love…and those who mocked me soon became addicted as well. It is scary and yet you cannot turn away.
I just subscribed to Netflix for the same reason! All those reality shows that they’re putting on now instead of the real shows don’t appeal to me at all! I think there is a new ER scheduled for next week, though, if you watch that. Happy movie watching!
