I have been sick since last monday or tuesday with a cough/cold/influzenza that has totally kicked my ass. M has been sick that whole time too, with a fun double ear infection thrown in for kicks. Mr. A has the cough now too, but he is about 3 or 4 days behind M and me.
Then today, L had a fever. She doesn’t seem to have the cough and her other symptoms are random and make no sense (crabby, fever, diahrrea, crabby, runny nose, crabby), so I was not sure what her problem is. If I were a betting woman, I would say that her two damn molars are finally close to the surface and may pop through sometime in March (I should be so lucky!)
I was afraid that L had an ear infection too, because she has been asking for an earstick over the last few days. (If we ever needed proof that L was a good fit as my daughter, it is her love of ear cleaning…who would think a 22 month old could lay perfectly still while I scrape her ears with a stick? We are a match made in heaven, I tell you…)
Anyway, I took L to the doctor today, just to rule out an ear infection. A quick look with an otoscope produced no ear problems, but the doctor did suggest that we run a flu test since the rest of our family was so sick for the past week. The flu test involves sticking a LOOOOOONG Qtip way, way far into L’s sinuses.
She was not thrilled.
The funniest part, though, is that L has been processing the appointment all night.
She still isn’t much of a talker, but every so often she will say “Doctor…… EARS(pointing)……….Doctor……..Nose!(pointing)” Each time, she shakes her head and looks properly appalled by the entire experience.
God, I hope we are all healthy by the weekend. This sucks.
This ear stick business is freaking me out. This is the second day in a row I’ve heard about this. I had a friend who just came back from Manila who said that there are street kids who want to clean your ears with these earsticks for cash. And so my friend did it, and he says his ears were never so clean. I wear hearing aids so I appreciate a good ear cleaning, but still don’t know if I’d be okay sitting in the middle of a busy city street sidewalk while a ten year old stick a long, protruding object down my ear canal. My pediatrician even gets miffed at the thought of a Qtip in the ear, I wonder what he would say about an ear stick?
Anyway…I hope that all of you feel better and that no one has to be stuck with anything anywhere near their orifaces any time soon.
You’ve all been sick, but you’ve managed to get all those projects on the house done? Please tell me HOW. That is truly amazing.
What are these ear sticks and where do you get them? LSP complains that her ears hurt but when I take her to the doctor he says they’re fine, just a bit waxy.
Wow. I’ve known people who just didn’t have body odor (one of my brothers, actually — all 3 of German/Portuguese descent — but only one of them grows no hair under his arms & never has any body odor) but who knew there were different types of ear wax? I can’t even imagine such a thing.
And cleaning it works? With my [wet, copious] ear wax, if I try and clean it, half the time I end up getting it jammed in there & blocking off my ear drums.
I’m just tickled that there are different types of ear wax. I think you should take pictures for us.
I’m sorry about all of the illness. I hope that L can recover from the Doctor trauma… At least she’s working through it!
I am so going to find an ear stick because OMG. Maggie’s ears alternately disgust and fascinate me. I know all that wax in there must bug her. I would love to get it out!
I can’t believe you accomplished YEARS worth of home improvement in less than a week, while sick, with sick kids. I will be proud if I put the dishes in the dishwasher during naptime.
Did you get the flu shot? I just had the flu and it was horrible. I couldn’t get out of bed for two days. This was the first time in years I missed work for being sick. Anna got the flu shot and did not get sick.
You can tell the flu from a cold. ..fever, body ache,headache,….
This thing you have w/ ear wax I have w/ popping blackheads…except my family won’t sit still for it…sigh
My grandmother would get hers (ear wax not black heads) out w/ a hair pin….tried doing it but I don’t produce much and I ended up hurting myself…I’m sticking to black heads!LOL
