Creepy Crawlies (aka the south is not my friend)
We seem to be facing a low-grade biblical style pestilence so far on vacation:
1.) L stepped on what we think is a hornet’s nest, was swarmed by about 30 insects and acquired two stings. (Granted, this could happen anywhere, but it started us off on the wrong foot where creepy crawly things are concerned.)
2.) The chi-chi private-ish island where we are staying seems to be infested with spiders as big as M’s hand. These things spin webs the size of a small house. Seriously, that is about enough to keep me inside for the entire week. That is, if I could be confident that they are not able to get into the house. As of right now, I am not at all confident of that fact.
3.) I saw a cockroach the size of my thumb in the very fancy and clean condo kitchen. Between the spiders and the roach, every time I enter a new room, as a precaution, I turn on the lights, stomp my feet a few times, and examine all the baseboards and corners of the room.
4.) Mr. A got stung by a jelly fish. And yes, he did pee on it. Twice. Actually, he peed into his cupped hand and splashed it on his leg. Fortunately, we were near the beach club locker room so I didn’t actually have to watch this spectacle. My niece also apparently brushed up against a jelly fish, but my sister would not allow anyone to pee on her. She also rejected my offer of rubbing L’s pee diaper on little G’s leg. G recovered despite her urine-free status a few minutes and one juicebox later. Oh, and by the way, Mr. A claims the pee stopped the pain immediately. (I didn’t tell him that Dr. Google claims it is not effective.)
You should put vinegar on the sting. Peeing on a Jellyfish sting is a myth. It doesn’t do anything. Use vinegar then drink hard alcohol.

I would drink the hard alcohol just because of the spiders!
Use meat tenderizer on jellyfish stings. Just try not to think about what they’re actually doing to your body chemically.
Maybe try spraying yourself with RAID instead of suscreen.
Another remedy for jellyfish stings: Windex.
Huge spiders would send me screaming.
Where are you BTW? Are you on one of the fake islands in Dubai?….I bet you are. You guys love Dubai.
yes - please tell where you are because I would be afraid of all the creepy crawlies and hope this is not someplace on my ‘to visit’ list!
Sounds like home
I used to live in central Florida and you just get used to bugs taking over creation- no matter how clean the house is or how often the exterminators come!
Sorry to hear about L’s encounter with the waspy kind
And ROFL on the peeing on a jellyfish sting!
Having grown up on a lake I know that where ever there is water, there are spiders. I always keep spider spray with me. The kind they use on boats works very well. I guess this is the price you have to pay to be at the chi chi vacation spot. Have fun!
I want to hear more about the kind of spider spray they use on boats, please. About the pee? Hilarious. By the way, M has the runs. Do your children?
Peg, go to any marine shop and they will have spider spray. It kills instantly and then continues to kill for up to 3 months so you don’t get any new ones for a while.
This is off-topic, but I am just curious to know: it seems as though more and more of your blogging cohorts are shutting down their blogs and moving on. Are you thinking along these lines as well? What is it that motivates you to blog and share your life with strangers?
I just read in Parenting magazine that you’re supposed to use saltwater for jellyfish stings, and definitely not fresh water, which will only make it worse. The article didn’t mention pee.
You really, really don’t have to pee on the sting. The stinging feeling is actually caused by the tiny lacerations on your flesh being flooded by salt water. So if you flood the area with fresh water (or anything not salty I s’pose) you will relieve the stinging. No urine necessary, I promise. (Will admit I am laughing a bit here).
I have never commented before but had to say I couldn’t stop laughing at #4…still laughing. I heard peeing on jellfish wounds helps also…still laughing..
