Last weekend, we got together with Mr. A’s side of the family* to celebrate our niece’s 3rd birthday and our nephew’s 1st birthday. BIL’s family is from Korea, so they decided to do a traditional Korean one year birthday thingamabob for Nephew. He got to choose between yarn (long life), rice (full belly), paper and pen (scholarship) and money (wealth). Smart boy that he is, Nephew chose the money.
(This pic isn’t actually of him grabbing the money because he was annoyed by the flashing photos then and was crying)
Then, since we were curious about what the future would bring for the rest of the kids, we had them try their luck too. Second up was L. She went straight for the cash.
Then, it was the Birthday Girl’s turn. Not only did she go for the money, she took a dollar and ran off with it.
Then it was M’s turn. She went for the money too, but was quite disappointed when she had to give it back. (To be honest, M probably chose the money because we all were laughing about the younger three choosing it. )
I have decided that given these auspicious choices, Mr. A, BIL, SIL and I will all be able to retire comfortably as our wealthy children support us in old age.
*MIL didn’t end up coming because of a snow storm

Cute pics! Love L’s dress–we have that one, too.
They don’t get to keep the money?! That’s not fair.
The money thing is funny. At every dol I’ve attended, the grownups are rooting for the kids to choose money. My daughter went for the book.
Very cute! I’m not sure why, but we don’t do this….must not be a Cantonese thing…;)
