only 11 days left???

Is it possible that there are only 11 days until christmas?

I will confess, I am not ready.  I still haven’t received my xmas cards in the mail, never mind sending them out.  I have no idea what I have purchased for gifts so far, nor do I know who else I need to buy for.

I place part of the blame on an email I received about a week and a half ago.  A couple who had seen our house when it was for sale last spring had finally managed to relocate from California.  They wanted to know if we were we still interested in selling.

That led to much discussion and finally a decision that yes, we are still willing to sell  (if the price was right).  So we had to clean and restage the house in a huge hurry.  When they saw it, they still liked it.  That kicked off several days of negotiations and now it looks like we are going to be moving.  That is, if we manage to actually sign a purchase contract (supposedly happening in the next day or two) and make it through the inspection period (the part we previously screwed up repeatedly).

If we actually get to closing, we will have to find a house or apartment to rent in hopes that the perfect house will come on the market soon.  It is a big if, but in the mean time, we will be paying down my grad school loan debt super-quickly.

Financially, it is a good plan.

Stress-wise, it is doozy.

Poor Christmas has fallen by the wayside.  I need to get back on the ball.  House sale or not, Christmas is bearing down on us.  Crappity crap crap.

  • Oh, MY! I saw that tweet and thought, “Wait a minute, I thought someone *else* was moving?!” Good luck!

  • Wow, I hope all of this works out well for you this time, but it sounds horrifically stressful too. And now I can look forward to your house-finding posts!

  • Holy COW.

Now’s the time to give everyone a charitable contribution to Habitat for Humanity and be done with it.

What, kids don’t like charitable contributions? Oh.

  • I was just thinking of you – I got my Go Lite in the mail today. I have high hopes, will let you know how it goes!
And good luck with all the house craziness, it sounds exciting but super stressful. I can ‘t wait to see and hear about this dream house when it comes along.

  • Holy crap! I feel your pain though. I went from having no thought in my brain about buying a house to signing the Purchase and Sale Agreement in the space of maybe two weeks. These major life changes are just a little overwhelming, especially when combined with major holidays. But it’s nice to end the year with a bang, right?

Oh, and out of curiosity, how have you repeatedly screwed up the inspection??

  • We’ve sorta been in the same boat. We’ve been trying to sell our house for a few months. At Thanksgiving I decided we would pull the listing for the month of December so that we could have a calm holiday and not have to have perfect house. Then we got an offer on the 29th and they want to be in the house by Jan 1. We managed to push them off until Jan 8 but it’s not really that much help. We’re lucky enough to have found a storage space and some generous friends that are hosting us until we get into a new place.
Good luck with the packing up and trying to enjoy the season. It’ll all work out because Christmas is too fun to let drop and packing is too important to not do.

I hope it all goes well and a super awesome, perfect for you house comes available just as you need it.

So happy you were able to sell in this terrible market! I know you will find a great place to live while waiting for the perfect house. Who knows that house may be in China.

  • Wow. I just had a minor freakout about how fast Christmas is coming and I have no sudden house-selling plans to blame. Best of luck with the house stuff.

  • Yikes! What an exciting & busy time for you. Good luck!

Congratulations! I hope it works out brilliantly for you.

We just did the same thing: we sold our house super quickly and bit unexpectedly, and moved into a rental waiting for the perfect new house to come along. It took six weeks, but we finally found a house that is perfect! It was *pure hell* moving twice, but so worth it to be able to jump into this house without worrying about having financing lined up, bridge loans, etc. The house we are in now had four full price offers 24 hours after it went on the market, but we were first and had the cash in hand, so we ended up with the house. Yay us!

  • I’m so glad that all’s going well with the potential house sale. We’ve already moved, and yet, I’m nowhere near ready for Christmas. It must be something with 2009 because I feel like we’re always more on top of Christmas than this year!

  • I did the same thing in 2005. I came home with my daughter in July and realized I couldn’t afford the cost or time of maintaining my 1932 home. I listed it by owner in November and sold it within a week. The buyer wanted possession within 3 weeks as she’d sold her house. I managed to buy a townhouse in the neighborhood I wanted, but it wasn’t finished yet…plus I majorly downsized from 5 bedrooms to 2 so had a TON to get rid of. Thankfully one of my brother’s friends was moving into his first apartments at the time, so he helped me move in exchange for some of the furniture I no longer wanted (he made out well). It was insane – but SO worth it! I miss my house, but the move was the best decision I’ve ever made!

  • Oh wow…. congratulations! Hope it all goes smoothly.

  • WOW!! No wonder you’re stressed out! These are significant news indeed. Do keep us posted. And good luck for getting ready for Xmas…

be happy you have an offer! Our house has been on the market since Sept with no offers in sight. Pulling it off the market this weekend…perhaps to try again in spring.
