Oh my god. The experience of installing L’s crown was horrific. She freaked out and refused to allow the nitrous. Then, she screamed her way through the whole procedure.
The dentist handled it very well and L tried to be brave, but jeez louise, that was terrible. I had the option of stopping and rescheduling with valium, but I chose to just get it over with.
She will almost certainly will have dental PTSD after that.
To add insult to dental trauma, now L won’t be able to eat suckers, fruit snacks or sugared gum. Honestly, these are like her three very favorite things in the entire world. I wish I had had them pull the tooth and put in a spacer instead. At least then, if it came out it wouldn’t hurt. If this crown ever comes off, I will have them pull the tooth.
We are off to get her some vegan soft serve ice cream to sooth her jangled nerves. (Yes, I realize that bribing with more sugar is incredibly ironic given her tooth situation, but jesus, the kid deserves some kind of reward.)

when Mia had her big procedure she got soy pudding and jello cups. She was thrilled. And f-it. Just keep brushing and using those flossing sticks.
I swear by valium and kids. Omegadotter’s pediatric dentist used valium ages ago when she needed a crown, and not only was it hilarious to have a stoned 5-year-old in the car, but it was also a blessedly pain-free experience for her.
Hugs to L. That sounds like a truly horrendous scene.
Oh poor L and poor you!
I think L deserves 2 servings of ice cream. And you deserve a double serving at your next pub night!
Oy. Ice cream all around.
Can she have xylitol gum? It prevents future dental work, at least!
So sorry L had to go through that. Amelia has horrific teeth; she has knocked out more fillings than I care to remember because she WAS a teeth grinder. She’s had 3 or 4 teeth pulled (believe me the crowns are better). She has 2 crowns now and has had several filled – she’s also had a couple of “root canals” on her baby teeth (they are called something else for baby teeth).
Our dentist thought we might be better off at a pediatric dentist, but Amelia did NOT want to change. So he kept seeing her and Amelia has been a trooper. She had a major meltdown once when she saw the Novocain needle, but other than that we’ve been super lucky. I hope this is the last of it for L.
Amelia I’m afraid is in it for the long-haul.
Yes, poor both of you!
Poor L and poor You watching her and being able to do nothing for her and about the pain. I went through this crown procedure a year ago myself and I wish I could have screamed, gosh I hate dental procedures although there are ways of calming down an adult too
!
The valium would be for her right? Unclear in your post.
Poor wee thing. We pulled one of ZW’s molars and put in a spacer when she was 5. She still has it 4 years later. It can be done if needed.
Oh my god, poor L. I, an adult person, would never want to live without fruit snacks (and well, the other two), I seriously admire her for going through the awful procedure and living without these joys of life (sounds pathetic but this name seems appropriate to me). She definitely deserves a huge portion of ice-cream!
