Things have been slow going around here. This is why:
- We are about 90% done with our mini-kitchen remodel. That process has not been particularly fun. All we have left is having our kitchen cabinets painted and touching up a little paint on the trim. Should be easy enough, but I am having a hard time pushing through with this last little bit.
- Mr. A has been working like crazy. I think in the past 3 weeks, he has had ONE day off and has worked past 11pm most nights, including weekends. The other day, M said “I don’t even miss Daddy at dinner any more. I am totally used to him being gone!” One of our early parenting agreements was to prioritize family dinners, so I am decidedly unthrilled about this turn of events. If he were being paid Manhattan lawyer’s pay for these hours, I would probably find my annoyance easier to bear, but he isn’t. I am tired of being a single parent.
- We are getting ready to go to Disney with my parents. My feelings about Disney have been well documented here, but we are going anyway. Mostly because my parents are paying for about 75% of it, which means we will be beholden to do exactly what they want to do most of the time. The girls will enjoy it, I guess. The only bright spot is that M is obsessed with all things Hogwarts so we are going to take a day and go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter (which I actually am looking forward to). I am going to need to drink (or many) to get through this trip.
- I am tired because it has been very rainy and dreary here. Note to my next year self, YES you did start using the magic light in September. You don’t regret it. It did help. And crap if I didn’t just look outside and see it has started raining again. Eff you, stupid weather. Eff you.

I know how you feel about Disney, but it really can be fun if you don’t stand in too many lines. Use Fastpass to skip as many queues as possible. It makes a massive difference to the experience. And getting up early helps too.
Harry Potter is amazing, but it can be really really busy. Read some tips before you go, if it’s quiet and you don’t need them then great, but if it’s crazy busy then every single tip you’ve read will be worth it.
My number one tip is put your stuff in a locker before you attempt to ride Forbidden Journey. The enormous line outside the castle is for the lockers not for the ride.
I have been so tired lately, but forgot about my magic light. Definitely need to break that out tomorrow!
I seem to have hit a tipping point in terms of the light, all of a sudden. Even though the past few days have been brilliant, gorgeous autumn days, I am stewing in depression and on the verge of tears all the time. So, YAY for Magic Lights! Keep doing it, even if it doesn’t seem to help at first.
I had not been to Disney, but did break down and take Amelia last year. She LOVED it and that was worth it for me.
I’m very jealous about your side trip to Harry Potter; Amelia thinks it is scary, so I didn’t even entertain the idea.
“Scary”?
Why?
Hi! I’m actually from Orlando and work at Disney. My husband works at Universal. I just wanted to suggest that on the day you go and see Harry Potter you get there as early as possible and head straight there. Harry Potter has never slowed down and is always so busy. It is a lot more fun if you can have some time when it isn’t so crazy, especially with younger kids. I hope you are able to have some fun!
Speaking of Harry Potter, I’ve just been listening to the soundtrack from Deathly Hallows Part 2 and it makes me cry every time.
Have you seen it yet?
HI Looking forward to hearing your report. We are stopping at Orlando this spring when it will be heaving but no choice as coming from the UK. Elder one wants to go to Harry Potter, but am assuming the 5 year old will find it way too scary. Like to get feedback and tips on that!
Please, push a little rain down here? My yard is straw.
