  I did have a first floor master when I had teenagers and I LOVED IT. All of their crap and mess was out of the way–where nobody could “accidentally” wander. There were two issues: One was attempting to call them to dinner/the phone/the door through a closed door (even a cheap, hollow-core, door) so we had wireless doorbells for each of them. The second was that their bathroom held the only tub in the house, which was problematic when young visitors needed an unexpected bath and the teenagers’ bathroom was a pig stye.

  My brother’s house is like this. They built it when they had one going into middle school and one going into high school. I thought they were insane – however they did one REALLY smart thing…their bedroom was at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the kids’ rooms. There was no way they could get in or out without walking past their parent’s room.
  Even now with one in college and one engaged I think they really like the house like this, guests feel like they have some privacy when they stay there and my brother and sister in law don’t have to worry about the stairs when they age:)

  I don’t have teenagers, but as a wheelchair user (because of unexpected trauma–no preplanning possible) I think it’s smart for any house to have some kind of bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor.

  when we were looking at houses and floorplans, at first we thought the master downstairs and the other rooms upstairs was a little odd, especially with the master at the bottom of the stairs. But then we started thinking about the very real possibility that someday in the not terribly distant future, one or more of our elderly parents might have to come live with us, and the main floor bedroom because a necessity. I agree with the rpevious commenter that it makes sense to have the teens HAVE TO pass by your door when they come home at night, too. We ended up building a ranch, though, also taking into account that someday WE would be the elderly ones in the house!

  It’s a great idea.

  When my sister was a teen and I was at college (only home for breaks) we had the world’s best floor plan. Parents downstairs, kids upstairs separated by a giant walkway that opened onto the great room below. My bedroom was next to the guest room, and shared a bathroom. Sister had her own bathroom. Easy for parents from downstairs to get us to poke our heads out from our respective “wings” and look down to see what they wanted. Kept noise, mess and privacy under control.

  I have six kids the eldest is 12..we have a first floor master. I like it alot.
