Well done. I must say that even with an official diagnosis of ADHD (both types) and SID we were unable to get either an IEP or 504 Plan in our district. She was not performing 2 deviations below grade level so they would not even talk about it. We should have taken your approach.

Advocating for our kids isn't easy, and it's sometimes most difficult with the schools. I wish it weren't true, but I am so proud of you for being a strong advocate despite an "adversarial" environment. Keep at it!

You are awesome! I was reading this like a sporting match (sad, isn't it?) because I've been to many of these as a teacher. When you talked about how she said L doesn't fit into any category (like that means she doesn't need services because of some bureaucratic definitions) I was screaming, "Other health impaired! Other health impaired!" and then I read the next paragraph and I was all, "YES!! GO!!" and was practcally standing up and screaming, cheering for you.

Many, many Professionals in the IEP process don't want their expertise questioned. And many times this expertise is almost entirely based on how to keep their caseload down and make life more convenient for themselves. Scare tactics are sometimes the only thing that penetrates that.

Now imagine how well the system works for kids who don't have parents willing or able to go to the mat in these meetings. And yes, it's about money. If you're lucky you will still have the same team members to meet with the next time. Typically they change constantly and everything you've said and done to get this far is forgotten or unknown by the next "team".
Parents unable to "lawyer up" and without the resources to understand their child's rights are quickly never get as far as the meeting.

Been here, done this.
