Hunger Games X3 (tyt #3)

I just got home from seeing the Hunger Games…for the third time since Thursday.  Three times is enough.

Also, on my way home from the theater, I passed three police cars patrolling the very quiet suburban neighborhoods and roads.  I am glad to know while I am sleeping (or sitting in movie theater), the police are making sure my neighborhood and home are safe.

Thank you Taxpayers!

This morning, when I turned on the faucet, pipes brought potable water right to my kitchen.

New Series: Thank You Taxpayers Post 1- public schools

Tonight, I was reflecting on all the ways my fellow taxpayers have improved my life and the lives of my family and friends.  Here I am, living my nice, upper middle class existence and at the same time, I am being subsidized by my fellow citizens, many of whom have far fewer economic resources than I.

In a time when it is trendy to complain about how much we pay in taxes–not to mention the accusations about all those pesky poor people soaking up government funds–let’s turn the tables around and look at the benefits I have acquired as a citizen of this great nation.

With this series, I would like to thank the government of the United States of America, the State of Ohio and my fellow tax payers for everything you do and have done for me, my family and my friends.

I can’t promise I will post every day, but I have a LOT to be thankful for, so this could go on for quite a while.

I attended public schools for grades K-12.  I am glad to be a member of the educated citizenry!

Thank YOU Taxpayers!

P.S. I am glad I can help your kids go to school with my tax dollars too!

holier than thou

Dear Super-Christians,

I want to like you.  Really, I do.  I want to believe *you* believe in the teachings of Jesus.  Especially those about loving your neighbor and being kind.  Every time I think I can buy that you guys believe this stuff, you go and act like flaming assholes.

For example today, an UberChristian I know posted a rather hateful thing on Facebook about “illegal immigrants” who get food stamps, health care,  and housing.   Call me crazy, but I happened to think food, health care and adequate housing are HUMAN RIGHTS not AMERICAN CITIZEN rights.

Maybe I am wrong?  Maybe there was a section of the bible where Jesus was saying we should only treat privileged American citizens with compassion?  Was there a parable about leaving non-citizens to die in the streets or to let children go hungry because their parents don’t have the correct paperwork?

I have been in countries where children are allowed to starve to death and no one seems to care.  That is not the country I want to live in.  I want to live in a country where we have compassion for our neighbors, regardless of their immigration status or their misfortune of not being born as citizens of one of the wealthiest countries on earth.  Isn’t compassion and generosity the very heart of what a Christian nation should represent?

If you Christians want to hold me to the standards of a religion I don’t even believe in, well, I am going to turn the tables.  When Christians act hypocritically, I suppose they need to be reminded of the core tenets of their own faith.  And if that reminder has to come from a Heathen like me, so be it.

And NALT  Christians, where the heck are you? I know there are some out there.  I’ve seen pictures and I’ve heard your voices, but you aren’t loud enough.

Sincerely,
AmFam

(A high income bracket tax payer who is more than happy to pay higher taxes so the less fortunate have adequate food, shelter and health care.Blasphemy, I know.)

may the odds be ever in your favor

I was going to write something tonight, but I decided I should read the Hunger Games again in preparation for the movie premier later this week.  Sadly, no one will agree to go to the Thursday midnight showing with me (losers), so I am debating going to see it alone or going friday afternoon while L is in school.  We also have a group date scheduled to see it again on Saturday.

You can guess that I am pretty excited, right?
